Most people pray for their marriage only when something is wrong.

That is understandable, and it is also why so many couples find themselves praying urgently about a crisis that a year of ordinary prayer might have prevented. Marriage prayer works best as maintenance rather than as emergency repair.

What follows is fifteen areas, each with a short prayer. You are not meant to pray all fifteen daily — that collapses within a week. Take two or three, pray them for a few days, and move on. Fifteen areas across a month works out at roughly one every two days.

A note on praying alone: most people reading this will be praying without their spouse, either because the spouse does not pray or because the marriage is in a place where praying together is not currently possible. That is entirely valid. Every prayer here works prayed alone.

1. For love that survives the ordinary

Romance is easy to pray for. What actually sustains a marriage is affection that persists through the tenth year of the same routine.

Father, renew our love for each other. Not only the feeling, but the choosing. Where familiarity has dulled us to one another, help us see each other clearly again.

2. For honest communication

Lord, give us the courage to say the true thing and the grace to hear it. Where either of us has stopped speaking to keep the peace, open our mouths. Where either of us speaks carelessly, give us restraint.

3. For our finances

The most common source of sustained conflict in marriage, and one of the least prayed about.

God, You know our needs and our pressures. Give us provision, wisdom in how we use it, and unity in how we decide. Do not let money become a thing we fight over or hide from each other.

4. For patience with each other’s weaknesses

Father, I know my spouse’s faults and they know mine. Give me patience where I want to be irritated, and give me honesty about my own part in what I find difficult in them.

5. For our physical intimacy

Lord, bless this part of our marriage. Where there is distance, awkwardness, or hurt, bring healing. Let it be a place of closeness rather than pressure for both of us.

6. For protection over our marriage

God, guard what we have. Protect us from anything that would divide us — from outside interference, from temptation, and from our own carelessness. Let neither of us look elsewhere for what we should be finding in each other.

7. For forgiveness

Father, help me forgive what I am still holding. Where I have been wronged, release me from carrying it. Where I have wronged them, give me the humility to say so plainly.

8. For our children, and our parenting together

Lord, make us united in how we raise these children. Where we disagree, let us work it out privately rather than in front of them. Let them see a marriage that makes them want one.

9. For our extended families

The pressure that ends more African marriages than most people admit.

God, give us wisdom with our families on both sides. Help us honour our parents without letting anyone come between us. Give us the courage to hold a boundary together when it is needed.

10. For our work and its pressures

Father, provide for us through our work, but do not let the work consume what belongs to each other. Where one of us is carrying too much, show us how to share the weight.

11. For friendship between us

The thing most couples lose first and miss most.

Lord, make us friends again. Give us things to talk about that are not logistics. Bring back enjoyment of each other’s company, and give us time to actually use it.

12. For health

God, I ask for health for my spouse — strength in their body, rest at night, and healing where there is sickness. Give me the attentiveness to notice when they are not well and the willingness to help.

13. For our spiritual life together

Father, draw us to You together and not only separately. Give us a shared practice we can actually keep. Where one of us is further along, guard us both from pride and from resentment.

14. For our future

Lord, You know what is ahead of us. Prepare us for it. Give us a shared vision for the years to come, and let us still be facing the same direction when we are old.

15. For myself, as a spouse

The one people skip, and the one that changes most.

God, make me the husband or wife my spouse needs. Show me what I am doing that I cannot see. Give me humility to apologise, patience when I am provoked, and love that does not keep score.

A simple monthly pattern

If you would rather not choose, this covers all fifteen across a month at two days each, with a review day at the end:

  • Days 1–2: love and communication
  • Days 3–4: finances and patience
  • Days 5–6: intimacy and protection
  • Days 7–8: forgiveness and parenting
  • Days 9–10: extended family and work
  • Days 11–12: friendship and health
  • Days 13–14: spiritual life and the future
  • Day 15: yourself
  • Repeat, or spend the second half of the month on whichever two areas surfaced most

Three things that make this work

Pray about your spouse, then about yourself. Prayer that is entirely about the other person changing tends to harden into a complaint with religious framing. The fifteenth point is not an afterthought.

Do not use it as leverage. Telling a spouse “I have been praying about your temper” converts prayer into an accusation. Keep it private unless they ask.

Expect it to change you first. The most consistent report from people who pray daily for a difficult spouse is not that the spouse transformed. It is that their own posture softened — that they began seeing the person rather than the problem. That is not a lesser outcome.

If your marriage is in a hard place right now

Prayer is not a substitute for the practical work, and it should not be used as a reason to avoid it.

If there is a specific unresolved issue, pray about it and then have the conversation. If the marriage is in serious trouble, pray and get counselling. If there is abuse, prayer does not replace safety — speak to someone who can actually help, from a device your spouse cannot access.

Praying for a marriage is powerful. It is not a reason to leave a problem unaddressed.
